Oregon State University

Company Overview

The Oregon State University (OSU) Hatfield Marine Science Center is a 49-acre coastal research campus that has operated in Newport for over 60 years. The Hatfield enterprise employs over 450 state and federal professionals and hosts over 460 students annually for hands-on research and experiential instruction.

In addition to OSU faculty and staff, Hatfield is an oceanographic research base for five state and federal research agencies, including NOAA, EPA, USDA, USFW, and ODFW, as well as ships and faculty from partner universities. Hatfield facilities include laboratories supplied by seawater (over 1 million gpd), a small boat storage area, shops, and the Innovation Lab, which is outfitted with prototyping and fabrication tooling and machinery focused on marine instrumentation development and testing.

Other ocean enterprise programs operated by OSU in proximity to Hatfield include PacWave (an open ocean facility for the testing of wave energy conversion devices) and the NSF-funded Ocean Observatories Initiative Endurance Array.

Company History

The Hatfield Marine Science Center began as a small, one-building fisheries laboratory in the early 1900s. Since then, it has grown into a 49-acre collaborative research and education campus.

The Hatfield Visitor Center officially opened in 1965, welcoming 50,000 visitors in its first year and helping OSU develop its extensive marine research and education program. As Hatfield grew, educators and researchers were brought on board, and additional wings and buildings were built to accommodate new programs and organizations.

In 1983, it was officially named the Mark O. Hatfield Marine Science Center in honor of U.S. Senator Mark Hatfield. He supported the center during its conception and construction. Over the past several decades, Hatfield has grown to include groundbreaking research programs dedicated to marine mammals, wildlife refuges, fisheries, underwater volcanoes, and marine animal genetics.

Today, Hatfield enjoys collaborations with five state and federal agencies; it hosts student programs from OSU and community colleges to students in grades K-12 and works to educate the public on oceanographic topics.
