Ventura Harbor Boatyard, Inc., a subsidiary of Silver Bay Seafoods-California, LLC, is looking for a Marine Repair Manager to support mid -sized boatyard/small shipyard servicing; Recreational, Commercial Fishing, Research, Govt Vessels, and Industrial Craft from 20 to 200 ton up to 130 ft. in length. The Repair Manager, will support mid -sized boatyard/small shipyard servicing; Recreational, Commercial Fishing, Research, Govt Vessels, and Industrial Craft from 20 to 200 ton up to 130 ft in length. In this role the Repair Manager guides and manages oversite for vessel repairs acting to assure repairs are carried out in compliance with best and acceptable marine standard, USCG, ABYC and other applicable technical and marine standards regulations. The Repair Manager leads and drives the work across multiple craft shops in an expeditious and cost-effective manner to ensure company requirements and goals are met. In this critical role it is imperative you are comfortable overseeing all Job Estimations, Contract Bidding and Repair Cost Control.  Qualified candidates will act as an engaged and proactive partner with leadership and operations team members.         


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties in this position include the following:

  • Assist Foremen in pursing and achieving company goals for safety, quality, and productivity
  • Develops recommends, establishes, and enforces work standards, production schedules, quality and quantity requirements, and work rules consistent with operating policies, productivity levels of standard vessel maintenance work, and assigned goals and objectives.
  • Allocates department resources to efficiently support all contracts
  • Oversee and monitor schedule performance, including review of ongoing and upcoming projects, investigation of late activities, project supervision and the development of practical solutions
  • Maximize billable hours -Prepares reports on work progress, materials used and costs, and adjusts work schedules as indicated by reports. Responsible for operating within the established budget and for monitoring project costs while maintaining required standards of quality.
  • Ensure that employees understand and adhere to company policies -Ensures that employees are correctly carrying out the work procedures, interpreting specifications, and coordinating various phases of the repair process to prevent delays.
  • Reviews employee training needs and cross train to maximize employee skill base. Consults with supervision, craft heads and project managers to recommend solutions to training needs in seeking out opportunities to maximize use of craft trades. May on occasion be required to perform work necessitating the use of tools
  • Communicates with craft supervisors towards completion of vessel repair

Education and Experience

  • Must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in marine trade
  • Associate degree in any technical skill associated with marine repair, and four to six (4 to 6) years of progressively more complex work experience demonstrating the required vessel repair and production management skills; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

  • Knowledge of marine-related equipment, vessel repair and construction techniques; sequencing of repair activities; shipyard safety practices; apply math principles to repair activities.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and employees; read, analyze, and interpret repair specifications, blue prints, general business periodicals, marine repair/shipyard professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations; write reports, business correspondences and procedures; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; accomplish tasks through influencing those not in the direct line of authority.
  • Effectively resolve conflict; providing positive customer service; using tools as required for accomplishing the work.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Must demonstrate technical knowledge of various trades and vessel systems. Effectively Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form
  • Knowledge of ABYC and USCG standards and regulations
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and environmental regulations
  • Ability to be a Lead and motivate- exercises appropriate independent judgement in adjusting priorities, goals and work assignments, methods, procedures, and techniques to successfully facilitate vessel repairs and shipyard maintenance
  • The candidate must be self-disciplined, resourceful, and willing to accept responsibility for yard and customer assets as related to the assigned project.
  • Ability to use discretion and judgement in making operations and personnel decisions
  • Proficient computer skill required in Microsoft Office programs and other software
  • Good oral and written communications skills

Physical Demands

While performing duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to; lift/push/pull up to 20 lbs. on a daily basis, climb up and down ladders/gangways and work aloft from scaffolding and/or man lifts while wearing fall protection equipment. Must be able to bend, squat, stoop, crawl and kneel. Work requires awkward body position and good balance while working on uneven surface. Must be able to maneuver over obstructions such as ladders, scaffolding and boat structural members. Ability to wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment for extended periods of time and work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
