Relief Steward, R/V David Packard
Founded in 1987 by the late David Packard, MBARI is a nonprofit oceanographic research center advancing marine science and engineering to understand our changing ocean. Located in Moss Landing, California, the heart of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, MBARI offers ready access to the open ocean and deep sea. Ongoing research programs range across autonomous and remotely operated underwater vehicle systems, control technologies, ocean physics, chemistry, geology, biology, ocean instrumentation, and information management. MBARI hosts approximately 200 employees, with shore facilities that include state-of-the-art science and engineering laboratories, manufacturing and electrical fabrication shops, and dock facilities for MBARI vessels.
We are seeking a Relief Chief Steward aboard the R/V David Packard. This position will manage meal service, housekeeping, laundry service, and cleaning/maintenance of spaces on the vessel. Additionally, the incumbent ensures safety on deck and throughout the vessel at all times.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Food preparation, stores, inventory, menu planning assistance, and cooking
- Performs the duties of a mariner including painting, galley cleanup, and general tidiness of the vessel
- May assist with proper stowage of all lines, fenders, equipment, and ground tackle in a competent manner
- May assist crane operator for handling gear on deck or over the side of vessel in a safe and effective manner
- Effectively and safely operates small boats
- Ensures professional working relations with co-workers and customers at all times
- Performs related duties as assigned
Required qualifications
- U.S.C.G. Ordinary Seaman’s documents or equivalent
- TWIC card
- Works on assignments that are moderately complex in nature where judgment is required in resolving problems and making routine recommendations
- Must be able to lift 35 lbs.
- Ability to step up three feet
- Ability to work in a hazardous marine environment
- Ability to work up to one month continuously at sea between port calls
- Not incapacitated by seasickness
- Have a valid Driver’s License
- Must have a valid Passport
- Demonstrated experience working with a diverse group of individuals
- Must be able to communicate and interact in a professional manner
Preferred qualifications
- U.S.C.G. able bodied ‘s documents or equivalent
- International STCW credentials
- 6 months demonstrated success as a Steward
- Works on assignments that are complex in nature where considerable judgment and initiative is required in resolving problems and making recommendations

Salary range: $29.00-$34.00/hour
